Professor Jianqing Fan, of the UNC Statistics Department, was presented
with the COPSS award for 2000 on August 16 at the Joint Statistical
Meetings in Indianapolis.
This award, named for the Committee of Presidents of Statistical

the age of 40. It is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards
available in the Statistics profession.
According to the citation for the award, Professor Fan was honored
"for his important and wide-ranging contributions to statistics.
His work on local linear fitting is widely regarded as seminal in this
field and has provided a firm theoretical foundation for nonparametric
regression modeling. His fields of publication run from wavelets
and decision theory to generalized linear models, survival analysis,
errors in variables, parametric inference and multivariate analysis.
He has aided statistical scholarship through dedicated editorial
work and his guidance to students. He has applied his methodologic
skills to problems in industrial engineering and ophthalmology.
The 2000 Presidents' award honors Professor Fan for his many brilliant
contributions to statistical theory, methods, scholarship and applications."
